Two Japanese companies have reported major data breaches following unauthorised access to their computer systems, potentially exposing information belonging to millions of customers, local media reported Monday.

Monogatari Corp., operator of the Yakiniku King barbecue restaurant chain, said information belonging to more than 10 million customers was leaked after unauthorised access to its reservation and rewards app, according to Kyodo News.

The compromised information included customers’ names, email addresses, phone numbers and membership numbers.

The breach was detected Friday, the company said, adding that it had found no evidence so far that the leaked information had been misused.

Separately, Daiwa Securities Group said data belonging to around 110,000 customers of its brokerage unit may have been compromised following unauthorised access to a contractor-operated server, Kyodo reported.

The intrusion occurred between Friday evening and Saturday morning on a server operated by Scala Communications Inc., which provides Daiwa Securities with an online customer inquiry management service.

Potentially exposed information includes names, email addresses and account numbers.

Including inquiries that contained no personal information, around 220,000 pieces of data may have been affected.

Daiwa said the compromised information could not be used to conduct transactions, including online trades.

The brokerage has also found no evidence so far that the potentially compromised information has been published or circulated online.
