Former “American Idol” contestant Caleb Flynn was sentenced Monday to life without the possibility of parole for murdering his wife, with an Ohio judge ordering him to first serve 16 additional years behind bars.

Miami County Judge Jeannine N. Pratt ordered Flynn to serve seven years for firearm specifications followed by nine years for three counts of tampering with evidence before beginning his life sentence for the murder of Ashley Flynn.

Pratt said consecutive sentences were necessary to protect the public and punish Flynn, finding the harm caused by his crimes was so severe that a single prison term would not adequately reflect the seriousness of his conduct.

Before Flynn was sentenced, one of his daughters confronted him in a letter read aloud in court by her uncle, Matthew Keyt.

“How could you do such a thing? I looked up to you. I loved you with all my heart,” Flynn’s daughter wrote. “Mommy was the perfect person. The absolute perfect person. What did she ever do to make you hate her so much?”

She wrote that she cries every day over her mother’s death but still prays every night for her father to confess and repent.

“It was your choice to have an affair. It was your choice to lie to everyone,” she wrote. “It was your choice to leave your only two daughters.”

Flynn’s other daughter, Alyssa, also confronted her father in a letter read aloud by her grandmother, Jill Smith.

“The least you could do is tell everyone you did it and receive your outcome,” Alyssa wrote. “Also, please repent to God, the one who created you. Your time isn’t over.”

Alyssa questioned how her father could stand in church and sing about his love for God while keeping secrets from his family, and told him Ashley was “the best thing that ever happened to you.”

“Through all of what you put me through, God is going to work something out for good,” Alyssa wrote. “And by the way, I don’t plan on coming to see you.”

As his daughter’s words were read aloud, Flynn could be heard sobbing into a tissue at the defense table.

Ashley’s sister, Kayla Keyt, also addressed Flynn directly, telling him he had taken a mother from her daughters and shattered a family that trusted him.

“You took Ashley from the earth,” Keyt said. “You took a mother from her daughters.”

Keyt told Flynn she nevertheless forgave him, saying she refused to allow hatred and bitterness to take anything else from her family.

Flynn addressed the court before sentencing, saying it was his first opportunity to speak publicly in eight months. He first addressed his daughters, telling them they remained his “greatest joy” and apologizing for the milestones he would miss.

Flynn later apologized to Ashley’s family for breaking his marriage vows and for the pain caused by his decisions, saying he took responsibility for his words and actions.

But he stopped short of accepting responsibility for Ashley’s murder.

“I did not kill my wife,” Flynn said, adding that he would continue fighting to prove his innocence.

Flynn received credit for 229 days already spent in jail and was ordered to pay $20,000 in restitution for funeral expenses, along with court costs.

Jurors found Flynn guilty of aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault and three counts of tampering with evidence after roughly 2½ hours of deliberations.

His defense argued that Flynn has no prior criminal history and is capable of rehabilitation, pointing to his years working in ministry and letters of support from his family.

Flynn’s parents were among several relatives who wrote to Pratt asking for mercy ahead of sentencing.

His father, Mike Flynn, told the judge his son’s “brokenness, shame, and remorse” were genuine, while his mother, Kim Flynn, wrote that her son had “repented to his Lord” and was remorseful for his decisions. Both asked Pratt for mercy.

Prosecutors sharply disputed that portrayal, arguing Flynn has never accepted responsibility or shown genuine remorse. They are asking Pratt to sentence him to life without the possibility of parole.

The verdict capped a trial that exposed Flynn’s secret affair, thousands of messages with his mistress and exchanges about wanting his wife dead before she was shot twice in the back of the head inside the couple’s Tipp City home Feb. 16.

Prosecutors argued Flynn killed Ashley before staging the scene to make it appear an intruder had broken into the home.

Flynn’s affair with Alleigha Botner became a key part of the case. Investigators recovered roughly 107,000 messages between the two, with prosecutors highlighting some of those exchanges for jurors.

Botner also read messages exchanged in the hours before Ashley’s death, including Flynn telling her, “It’s happening” and “Tomorrow it all starts.” In another exchange, Botner told Flynn, “You’re about to be free.”

Flynn’s defense argued the messages were being taken out of context and that references to being “free” meant divorce rather than murder.
