Civilians martyred by Indian Border Security Force near the Pakistan-India international border in Kasur

Two civilians were killed, and another was injured after Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel opened fire near the Pakistan-India international border in Kasur, state media reported on Friday, citing security sources.

Pakistan TV said in a post on X that the incident reportedly occurred when three residents from Ladhar village moved a few steps beyond a border pillar. Security sources claimed that the BSF personnel opened fire on the men without a warning.

The deceased were identified as Azmat Rasool and Mohsin Jutt, both residents of Jattan Wali Haveli in Ladhar, the sources said, adding that the third man was also injured in the shooting.

According to the sources, all three men were unarmed and had not attempted to cross the border fence.

The security sources further emphasised that the firing constituted a violation of the arrangements and standard operating procedures governing the international border.

Civilian casualties and injuries inflicted by Indian forces during 2016-2026

Cross-border firing along the Pakistan-India border has repeatedly resulted in civilian casualties, particularly in villages close to the Working Boundary.

In October 2016, the military’s media wing confirmed that two civilians, including a toddler, were martyred and another seven were injured in firing in the Harpal, Pukhlian and Charwah sectors.

Then again, in September 2017, ISPR said India targeted civilians with mortars and automatic weapons, resulting in the death of Muhammad Zahoor, a civilian in Dewra village.

The following year saw another major escalation. In May 2018, The Express Tribune reported that four members of the same family — a woman, two daughters and a son — were killed in firing along the Working Boundary near Sialkot, with 10 others reported injured. The report cited ISPR and the Foreign Office. The death toll climbed to 16 during a wider six-day confrontation.

A year later in October, the Foreign Office said a 10-year-old boy was martyred, and 16 civilians were critically injured in firing in the Sharda sector.

In May 2020, three civilians were reported seriously injured in the Nikial sector, while in September, two civilians were reported seriously injured in the Baroh sector. Both reports cited Pakistan’s Foreign Office.

In 2021, at least seven people were injured, including two elderly persons and a teen, in cross-border shooting. The situation changed for the better after the two sides reaffirmed their ceasefire in February.

Once again in 2023, The Express Tribune reported three civilian deaths and one serious injury in two LoC firing incidents.

2024 remained peaceful, a year after a war broke out between the nuclear-armed rivals.
