ISLAMABAD:
In a move aimed at commemorating Pakistan Day and Eidul Fitr, President Asif Ali Zardari has approved remission for prisoners, offering a gesture of goodwill and compassion. The announcement came on Friday, signaling a measure of clemency for eligible inmates.
Under the presidential decree, prisoners across the nation will benefit from a remission of 90 days each on the occasions of Pakistan Day, annually observed on March 23rd, and Eidul Fitr, a significant religious festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide.
President Zardari exercised his constitutional authority, invoking Article 45 and Rule 15-A, to grant this reprieve to deserving prisoners. However, it’s worth noting that not all prisoners will be eligible for this remission.

The remission will not apply to prisoners convicted of severe offenses such as murder, espionage, or anti-state activities. Additionally, those involved in crimes including rape, theft, robbery, kidnapping, terrorism, and financial crimes will also be ineligible for the remission.
Furthermore, the reduction in sentences will specifically target certain demographics within the prison population. Male prisoners over the age of 65 and female prisoners over the age of 60, who have completed at least one-third of their sentence, will be eligible for the remission.
Additionally, juvenile offenders who have served one-third of their sentence will also be entitled to this reprieve.
