Is Anne Hathaway Muslim?

A video of Anne Hathaway saying “Inshallah” during an interview with People magazine has gone viral on social media.

The Hollywood star casually said Inshallah while discussing her hopes for a long and healthy life.

“I want to have a long, healthy life, Inshallah. I hope so.” The clip  shared widely on social media sparked delighted reactions from fans.

Inshallah is an Arabic phrase meaning “if God wills” or “God willing.” It is commonly used across the Arab world to express hope for the future while acknowledging that outcomes ultimately depend on divine will.

The last high-profile use of Inshallah came during the first 2020 US presidential debate, when Joe Biden responded to Donald Trump on tax returns with a sarcastic “When? Inshallah?”

Hathaway’s use of Inshallah has left some viewers curious about whether the US actress is Muslim. She is not.

The actress was raised Roman Catholic and later her family joined the Episcopal Church; she has described her beliefs as a personal “work in progress.”
