The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been allocated nearly Rs 1,105 crore in the Union Budget 2026-27, marking an increase of about Rs 46 crore over the revised estimates of the previous fiscal year.

According to Budget documents presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday, the country’s premier investigating agency has been allotted Rs 1,104.98 crore for the upcoming financial year, reflecting a 4.4 per cent rise from the ongoing fiscal.

The CBI had received Rs 997.62 crore in the Budget Estimates for 2025–26, which was later revised upward to Rs 1,058.3 crore.

The government said the allocation is primarily meant to cover establishment-related expenditure of the CBI, which is tasked with investigation and prosecution in corruption cases involving public servants, private individuals, firms and other serious crimes.

The funds will also support a range of infrastructure and modernisation initiatives.

These include the upgradation of CBI training centres, the setting up of technical and forensic support units, comprehensive modernisation of facilities, and the purchase of land and construction of office and residential buildings for the agency.

The CBI has increasingly been dealing with complex and emerging forms of crime, including cases involving artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency transactions and activities on the darknet, in addition to traditional offences such as bank loan frauds.

The agency is also handling several high-profile extradition cases pending before courts overseas.

Apart from cases registered on its own, the CBI investigates matters transferred by state governments, high courts and the Supreme Court, significantly expanding the scope of its workload.

Meanwhile, the Union Budget has also earmarked Rs 1,492 crore for the functioning of Parliament in 2026–27. Of this, Rs 1,009 crore has been allocated to the Lok Sabha, including grants-in-aid for Sansad TV.

The Budget provides Rs 1.56 crore for the salaries and allowances of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha, while Rs 416.45 crore has been set aside for the salaries, allowances and facilities of Members of Parliament.

An additional Rs 586.03 crore has been allocated for the Lok Sabha Secretariat to meet staff salaries, establishment expenses, grants-in-aid and Sansad TV-related costs.

The Rajya Sabha has received an allocation of Rs 482.99 crore, including Rs 2.55 crore for the salaries and allowances of the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Upper House.
