Different sections of the motorway were closed for traffic on Monday after dense fog again engulfed different parts of the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), resulting in extremely poor visibility at some places.
M-1 was closed for traffic from toll plaza to Burhan interchange, while M-2 from Thokar Niaz Beg, Lahore to Balkasar.
Similarly, M-3 was declared off-limits for traffic from Faizpur to Darkhana, while M-4, from Pindi Bhattian to Kot Abdul Hakim.
M-11, connecting Lahore to Sialkot, was also closed for traffic after visibility dropped considerably.
On national highways, too, visibility was between 0 to 100 meters.
Lahore remains blanketed by fog
Dense fog also engulfed Lahore and other cities of the Punjab, resulting in a marked drop in visibility and also turning the weather quite chilly.
The weather department said that the maximum temperature in the city would be recorded at 19 degrees Celsius, while it would remain 8 degrees Celsius on the minimum side.
It predicted that the weather would become colder in the provincial capital in days to come despite reduction in smog.
The humidity level in the air was recorded at 68 per cent, while breeze was blowing at the speed of two kilometers per hour.
Fog was also reported from other cities of the Punjab, including Sargodha, where routine life was disrupted due to fog as motorists had to drive vehicles at a snail’s pace.
Weather in Islamabad remains bitterly cold
Just like other parts of the country, weather in Islamabad remained bitterly cold on Monday.
The Met Office said that the maximum temperature would go up to 20 degrees Celsius, while breeze would blow in the city at the speed of seven kilometers per hour.
The level of moisture in the air was recorded at 60 per cent.
The Met Office forecast dry weather for the federal capital during the next 24 hours.
However, it said that showers were expected in the city from December 30 until January 2.
Met Office predicts rain for Balochistan, Karachi
On the other hand, the Met Office said that westerly winds would enter Balochistan today due to which rains were likely in Quetta, Ziarat, Kalat, Chaman, Pishin, Qila Abdullah, Noshki, Harnai and Barkhan from today until December 31.
It also predicted rainfall for different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) from tomorrow.
The Met Office also forecast snowfall for the country’s northern areas besides rain for Karachi tomorrow.
