The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday dismissed Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti’s plea to delay local government elections in Quetta.
Bugti had submitted the petition on Monday, citing a worsening law and order situation in the provincial capital and the suspension of internet services as reasons to postpone the polls.
In its written order, the ECP stated that the elections will proceed as scheduled.
Polling in Quetta district is set for December 28, 2025, and all relevant institutions have been directed to provide full assistance in line with the Constitution.
The commission also called for strict security measures to ensure the safety of voters, candidates, the public, and election staff during the polls.
“Peaceful polling in Quetta must be ensured without interruption,” the ECP order read.
However, ECP member Shah Muhammad noted in a dissenting note that harsh winter conditions could reduce voter turnout. He highlighted that people often migrate to other districts during the winter season.
