Speaking ahead of his visit to New Delhi for AI Impact Summit, Pichai outlined company’s long-term commitment to the country’s AI ambitions

Google CEO Sundar Pichai.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, said the company aims to partner with India across the entire AI stack during what he described as an “extraordinary time of hyper progress in a pivotal technology.” Speaking in a wide-ranging virtual interview with Economic Times from Mountain View, California, ahead of his visit to New Delhi for the AI Impact Summit, Pichai outlined Google’s long-term commitment to India’s AI ambitions.
One of the most influential leaders in the global AI landscape, Pichai recently announced a $185 billion capital expenditure plan focused on artificial intelligence. Over the past decade, Google has played a foundational role in advancing AI — from open-sourcing key research to developing custom compute chips (TPUs), flagship models like Gemini, research through DeepMind, large-scale data centre infrastructure, and sustainable energy integration.
“We are coming with a very clear message: we want to be a partner to India,” Pichai told Economic Times. “I believe India is going to have an extraordinary trajectory and opportunity with AI. Our role can span the full stack — providing the infrastructure and compute needed for this transformation, investing in the sustainable energy required to power it, offering open models and datasets, conducting research with local partners, and creating opportunities for India’s talent base.”
On infrastructure, Pichai said Google is collaborating with Reliance Jio to establish a cloud region and working with energy providers across the ecosystem, including renewable projects such as a 150 MW facility in Rajasthan. The company is also partnering with groups such as Adani and CleanMax to expand its data centre footprint.
Beyond infrastructure, Pichai highlighted that Google is building AI-driven products and solutions specifically for Indian consumers and enterprises. Once seen as trailing in the AI race, Google has rapidly repositioned itself at the forefront of the industry.
