Pakistan on Thursday condemned India for violating the Indus Waters Treaty and taking unilateral actions affecting river flows. Addressing the weekly briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan had concerns over abrupt variations in the flow of the Chenab River, stressing that unilateral actions violate the principles of the Indus Waters Treaty and endanger bilateral cooperation.

The spokesperson said Pakistan remains a responsible state committed to regional peace, but India’s actions pose serious risks to stability.

“Unilateral measures regarding rivers are unacceptable and threaten the security and peace of the region,” he said.

The spokesperson called on the international community to take notice of India’s aggressive policies and treaty violations.

Referring to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s attempt to pull down a female doctor’s hijab, the spokesperson denounced the discriminatory treatment of minorities in India.

The spokesperson stressed that religious freedom and the protection of minority rights must be ensured.

“We strongly denounce the derogatory behaviour of Bihar’s Chief Minister, which reflects a broader pattern of discrimination against minorities in India,” he added.

On regional security, Andrabi expressed Pakistan’s concern over the continued presence of terrorist elements in Afghanistan, noting that these groups pose a grave threat to peace and stability in the region.

He said reports from the UN Security Council validated Pakistan’s position, highlighting groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other foreign terrorist networks operating in Afghanistan.

“These terrorist elements are the main obstacle to Pakistan-Afghanistan relations. Cross-border tensions, lack of ceasefire, border closures, and suspension of trade are all linked to terrorism,” he said, emphasising that Pakistan’s concerns are fully aligned with international reports.

Responding to media reports regarding Field Marshal Asim Muni’s expected visit to the United States, Andrabi clarified that the news was incorrect and that no official visit had been scheduled.

The spokesperson said that Pakistan is presenting its position on key issues on all regional and international forums and working for lasting peace and stability in South Asia.
