Ratan Tata remains one of the biggest examples of businessmen who forged a connection with the people. The late Chairman Emeritus of the conglomerate, Ratan Tata, remained in the news not just for his business ventures like the Nano, but also for his philanthropy and love for stray dogs. But did you know that Ratan Tata was not the only member of his family to live in a simple manner? One relative of the late industrialist does not even own a mobile phone. That person is none other than Jimmy Naval Tata, Ratan Tata’s younger brother.
The 85-year-old prefers to keep a low profile. He also stayed away from the family business. Here is all you need to know about Jimmy Tata.
Who Is Jimmy Naval Tata?
He is the younger son of Naval Tata and his first wife, Sooni Commissariat. In 2023, Ratan Tata shared a throwback black-and-white photo from his and Jimmy’s childhood. In his post, the industrialist mentioned that he and Jimmy were very close.
As per reports, Jimmy Tata resided in a 2-BHK flat in Mumbai’s Colaba. Despite his wealth, he prefers to keep a low profile and does not even own a mobile phone. According to a post by Harsh Goenka in 2022, Jimmy Tata would always beat him at squash matches.

Though he did not join the family business, Jimmy has stakes in Tata Sons and various other companies of the conglomerate, including Tata Steel, TCS, Tata Motors, Tata Power, and more. He is a trustee of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT).
According to a Times of India report, Tata now resides in Pune. He was not present for the annual meeting in October 2025 that was supposed to finalise Mehli Mistry’s reappointment as a lifelong trustee at SRTT. Mistry was removed from the Tata Trusts board.
Although he holds key roles at SRTT and across the broader Tata Trusts, Jimmy rarely takes part in formal votes or board discussions, according to the outlet.
What Did Ratan Tata Leave His Younger Brother In His Will?
According to reports, Ratan Tata left Jimmy his share in the family’s Juhu property. Jimmy also received select silver artefacts and jewellery. He owns 3,262 shares of Tata Sons and continues as an SRTT trustee.
Jimmy’s last public appearance was on October 11, 2024, at Ratan Tata’s funeral in Mumbai.
