ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari held their first meeting on Tuesday since assuming charge of their respective offices.

PM Shehbaz and President Zardari exchanged views on the country’s overall political and economic situation. Both high-ups expressed joint commitment to steer the country out of challenges.

They also discussed measures for providing relief to the masses during the month of Ramadan.

It was first meeting between the top leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) which formed a coalition to rule the country after the 2024 general elections which were dominated by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) backed independent candidates.

The Bilawal-led party lent support to the Nawaz-led party, however, it refused to be part of Shehbaz-led federal cabinet.

Later, the PPP decided to pick top portfolio of presidency and fielded Zardari for second term who served as the 11th president of Pakistan from 2008 to 2013.

Both parties have not only formed an alliance in the Centre and the largest province of Punjab, but they also joined hands to form government in Balochistan.
