Israel ramped up airstrikes on Gaza and directed residents to evacuate some neighborhoods after a seven-day pause in fighting with Hamas. The head of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency told its delegation to return from Qatar, which mediated talks over the pause, after an “impasse,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced Saturday. The Israeli military said it was “preparing for the next stage — southern Gaza,” adding that warplanes had hit over 50 targets in the Khan Younis area. A spokesman for the Palestinian Civil Defense in Gaza said that Israeli strikes east of Gaza City on Saturday killed at least 60 people and leveled dozens of apartment buildings, and that hundreds of other residents were feared dead under the rubble.
